Hi Gang
I’ve got some exciting news and very rarely do I say pay attention because I would very rarely be so patronising or insulting but I really do suggest you sit up and pay attention this time round.
I came off a Skype conversation this afternoon with a very good friend on the Internet who is also one of the oldest and most longstanding of our SLSer’s and could hardly contain my excitement.
OK, I know I need to get out more, my wife and son tell me this on a regular basis but in this case my excitement was justified.
Our conversation had been about one of the early tests for our Web 2.o Slingshot Technique and he was actually the first non domestic test and first real client. Now bearing in mind all our previous tests had been on internal projects and we were pretty jazzed about those but this was one of the first real independent tests.
To be honest it didn’t start well and that I was really miffed about through a number of reasons, one of which was largely down to our over enthusiasm. Basically to use a culinary analogy we “over cooked it” in our enthusiasm i.e. in Internet Terms we got too many bookmarks on the Web 2.0 site in question to soon and though we couldn’t stop the process in question we didn’t get the immediate response that I thought we would get as the project though wasn’t quite flagged it certainly was being held back.
I was embarrassed because this was a friend that we’d done a favour for and also I felt let down that we had made the mistake. There were other mistakes but ours was the biggie. However as in all things like this sometimes it pays to let things rest for a few days / weeks and then “re convene” and see how the Campaign had gone. Imagine my excitement this afternoon when he contacted me with the phrase:
Client: I was looking into the test we ran and I think it worked somewhat even though the content was very commercial. I see about 20 back links just doing a yahoo site: search
sgsmorgan: cool
sgsmorgan: if it hadn't perhaps been so commercial then we could have got loads more traffic and more coverage in delicious
Client: Would this push the home page up even if it isn't the home page we bookmarked?
sgsmorgan: still there are a number of ways of looking at it I guess
sgsmorgan: yes as you are getting links to the site - thats what back links are all about, not just a link to a page. They affect the whole domain
Client: I pull up #5 on yahoo for xxx xxxx xxxx. I wasn't anywhere in site before this for that term (84 mill pages competition)
This is a site that was nowhere but was now sitting at No 5 in Yahoo for a very competitive phrase in the Finance business (don’t want to give away his niche / keyphrase) and that was on the back of a botched Web 2.0 slingshot!!!
Next time we’re going to get that one right!!
This made me then investigate further projects that we’d carried out at the time and re investigate and that was when one of my colleagues pointed out that we registered a brand new domain on 31st July of this year and the blog we set up with three posts was now (as a result of a slingshot and some back links) sitting at No 1 in both Yahoo and Bing for a phrase with lots of advertising (always a good test to see if there’s money in a niche – check to see if the SE’s have flogged any advertising. If they have then there’s money to be made) and 86.1 mill competing pages.
In 24 days!!
The site is also No 20 in Google and climbing.
OK the domain name was heavily key phrased and a .com but 24 days for goodness sake.
24 days ago this domain was merely an item on a keyword spreadsheet for goodness sake. Now the blog is sitting at No 1 for two key phrases (making 4 No 1 slots) and very nicely delivering some traffic and clicks.
How cool is that?
Anyway the upshot of all of this is that the Web 2.0 Slingshot can be made much more effective if we get our “Friends” group really happening so for all you members of SLS.
It’s now “Get Off Butt time” and let’s roll our sleeves up and really really hustle as this could have great benefits for us all as this is free. Yes I repeat. This is free to members and yet more evidence that we try and look after our members. You guys help us pay the bills and we exist to help you. See the members area for further info.
It’s that simple
If you are not a member then you know what to do?
